Use Handcent and change the default settings : Settings - > Send message settings Auto-convert

Use Handcent and change the default settings: Settings -> Send message settings Auto-convert to MMS - Uncheck this Split 160 - Set this to one of the Split options (I recommend Split by word & add counter but you may prefer a different one - I don't fully understand the differences between them all).
